a new chapter

it's been ages,g&w blog.

the sem is finally over and though i'm not officially done yet (thesis and all), i am a free man.
i have been doing some wandering around the city but it's mostly for my thesis. i'll post 'em here when i'm done but for now, it's still under wraps. oh and i got the funding that i was hoping for--so that's good but a bit of a pressure too. the pressure is welcome though! i really want this thing i'm doing to change some things around here.
totally unrelated; just a postcard from my italian friends when they were in Paris

london riots: be safe UK!

woke up to the news of the riots in London today. status updates of friends from birmingham and those in london and a message from Fran had me scurrying to school to get the deets on this issue.

let's all hope the problems in the Old GB gets resolved and that no one else gets hurt and no properties to be further damaged.

be safe, UK! BBC advises to just stay in. avoid the streets.

Mereki's MOVE, LEARN and EAT videos

more of these vids after the jump

this video has been trending in facebook for a few days now and i've been tagged in it a couple of times already. i kinda like that people think of me when they see stuff like these. shows they know me. shows how much i love the idea of moving. that stagnancy kills the soul. that it's not all about success, fame and money. although this video did probably cost tons of money. very much like this video i posted a couple of months ago but less professional. and less FACE. cos mine screams my face.

game of thrones in Gozo, Malta

i finally got to watching my copy of the Game of Thrones and yet another nostalgic scene presented itself to me! the venue for the wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen was by the Azure window in the Island of Gozo in Malta! They probably just used the background and didnt film there at all though. While watching before this scene came up, I was wondering where they filmed or what places they used because they all seemed so nice to visit and boom! they used Malta! Isn't it cool? i guess not so much for you, but it is for me! :)

anyway, here's a screenshot of the scene in the series and a pic of me in Gozo, Malta in May 2010 taken by mr and mrs potatohead. :) Also, as much as the series sounds geeky and dungeons-and-dragons-y (what really prevented me to watch it from the get-go), it really is quite addicting to watch. highly recommended!

a masochistic nostalgia or a nostalgic masochism

the other day, when i was procrastinating, very much like what i am doing today, i chanced upon the street view feature of google maps. i was trying to remember a place in Padova and how it was oriented in my mind.
and so i went trigger happy with my snipping tool. i went to town with it. literally, no digitally.
i was dying of nostalgia as i roamed the streets of Padova just like it was a closed door away.
a few clicks and i was back in Piazza dell'Erbe buying fruits and vegetables for tonight's feast, a few more and i'm at Owen's doorstep, too early for movie night and yet a few more i'm at franny's place, ready to trade files from our hard drives.

no pain, no gain

no. actually, i wish i was there;)

i've been popping pills to relieve me of my back pain for months now! for some reason though, yesterday and today have been soooooo painful. it even reaches my knees! im  too old for this.

i wonder if it needs exercise or the other way around and not do any sports at all.

Tom Parker Bowles of Esquire writes about his gastronomic tour in Manila

"We seem to lack a decent marketing of our food. And we don't show off our own food, rather we keep it to ourselves. Upscale Filipino restaurants have never worked. They're expensive and Filipino people will say, "They're not authentic, they're geared for foreigners and we can cook better at home so why bother?""

though, he really didn't paint a real pretty picture of Manila with his descriptions, i like how he fell in love with the Philippine cuisine.but then again, he did have some topnotch guides by his side so really, who wouldn't fall in love with food by Margarita Fores or a descendant of the Sisig pioneer.

finalmente

finally, after months of being in this country, we found a date to surf!
didnt get to ride my board which was by the way, safe and sound under luke's stairway but got good rides with marla's 9ft NSP and the 7.6ftNSP i rented. my board, as i was told is meant for bigger waves so the first session was just me paddling around trying to catch rides with itty-bitty waves. it was tiring but really really worth it.

also got to take underwater pics but bringing around sabs' camera turned out to be more of a hassle as we couldnt really surf with it. we had to pass it around. although it would've been nice to catch a wave with it and film the ride! :)

ive also been meaning to post my screen caps of google maps but thats for another post! :)

are you a true traveler?

i saw this on a tumblr im following and thought id share it!

40 Signs You’re a True Traveler

You won’t find many people in the world that downright dislike traveling, but there are many of us that can admit that we are “travel obsessed”. We spend our entire days thinking about travel, traveling, and travel-related things. Travel is our life, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Here is a list of 40 signs that you too, might be travel obsessed, or a True Traveler.

1. Instead of spending all of your money on that new phone, clothes, or big screen TV, you save it all for a plane ticket.

2. You wonder why people are always saying that they want to travel, but never do.

3. You get really irritated when friends “travel” to all inclusive resort hotels, and post hundreds of photos of themselves on the beach.

4. When you’re at home you include the currency in your prices, even though it’s obvious. Example: “I paid $40 Canadian for…”

5. You are always counting down to your next trip. Otherwise you are planning another one.

6. You often plan trips that you never take.

7. You’ve slept in more hostels than you can count on your fingers. And toes.

8. Your passport is scruffy and has stamps on every page. Renewed passports look too clean to touch.

9. You suffer reverse-culture shock. You feel more out of place when you return home, than you did while traveling.

10. When someone asks how many countries you’ve been to, you actually have to take a moment to count.

11. You refer to cities by their airport codes.

12. You hardly ever get lost, and when you do, you have no problem asking a local for help.

13. You use a beach towel for showering.

14. You spend all day reading travels blogs, and probably have one of your own.

15. You feel obligated to be friends with the other Canadian (or whatever your nationality) while traveling, even though you might not be while at home.

16. Your phone is full of geography and travel apps.

17. You have a subscription to both National Geographic, and National Geographic Traveler.

18. When you meet someone new, your first question is “where are you from?”

19. When you’re actually at home, most of your belongings spend their time in suitcases or boxes, because you never really unpack.

20. You can make take-out last for days.

21. You’ve spent more than one month in a foreign country. Alone.

22. You know about global disasters within minutes of the incident.

23. You have spent at least one night sleeping outdoors, somewhere.

24. When you ask someone for their address, you don’t mean e-mail. Postcards are the best.

25. Your New Year’s Resolutions always resemble a bucket list; listing off countries that you want to visit.

26. You commonly start sentences with, “My friend from ________ [insert country]…”

27. You commonly start sentences with. “This one time in ________ [insert city]…”

28. Your friends from home roll their eyes each time you come up with new travel plans.

29. Your permanent address is still your parents’ house, because you’re never in one place for long enough.

30. Your walls are covered in maps and photos of places that you’ve been, or would love to go.

31. You have a box full of souvenirs, trinkets, memories and random items from abroad. You keep everything from seashells to bus tickets, and beer caps to candy wrappers.

32. You have a map of the world tattooed somewhere on your body.

33. You have multiple currencies in your wallet right now.

34. You know that couch surfing has nothing to do with the ocean. Usually.

35. Your unborn children already have a bucket list.

36. You’ve taken a plane, followed by a bus, before a train, and then another bus, before a long walk and a second train and a cab.

37. You only watch TV for the travel channel.

38. If you haven’t traveled in too long, you get anxious.

39. When someone asks what your biggest passion is, you answer “travel”, without a second thought.

40. You’re named after a city :p

9, i guess im in a really prolonged version of this reverse-culture-shock right now.
10, i actually try to keep count but sometimes, i do forget. haha
18, hey, i actually do that!
19, this is very true. even though id really want to rid my place of all the clutter, there's this need to keep an emergency bag for those random trips
21, try, a year.
23, too many to count. airports, train stations, dilapidated and under construction houses, etc.
25,26,27,28, all true in my case
30, been planning to do that. just too expensive to print out my pics!
32, id get that tattoo if i did decide to get one
34, yeah, ive gotten a lot of quizzical looks because of the mention of that
35, this made me laugh. maybe i will make one for them now.
36, i mostly walk though. matter of preference. :)
38 and 39...very true for me

awesome travel related link!

here's a link for the restless souls out there!

wanderfly

As much as i am a spontaneous wanderer, this site is pretty cool. It does help out those who really need a PLAN and can't function without one.

indicate where you will be coming from and which part of the world you'd like to explore. then, money matters! budget travel starts at 400USD to 10,000USD! then you indicate which month you will be traveling and for how many days. pick your interests(art, outdoors, extreme, shopping, etc.), then click get going and the site suggests places that fit your own personalized trip!

although, i wish when i click get going, i magically transport to these places. :) but that's just me. cos then i'd click all the interests, get an infinite amount of money for me traveling in every month of the year forever!

in other news, i have been busy with school and a special project. thesis and all that. but i have opened my couch already to surfers landing in Manila. hoping to travel from the comforts of my place through interaction! it's still on a maybe stat since i want to my workload to stabilize first though.

will try to write more, blog. don't you worry.

a new place to call home

since, my camera is held hostage, i will post this. my host's flat in oslo.
i can only dream to have the view he has from this flat. see next photo.

i am in my new flat using up my neighbor's internet and im really hoping they never put a password to their connection while i am inhaling noxious fumes from the newly painted walls and ceiling. i have a pullout sofa bed from sabs as my only furniture. its 35+ degrees and i badly need to get a fan amongst other things. this is my new home! at least it's on the way to being a home. a sofa here, a chair there, a table here and a little bit of everything everywhere. soon, it'll be ready. for now, i'll stick with what i can get. :D update: i bought a fan already which will probably eat into my whole month's budget. which reminds me, i need to get a job soon!
you can see the whole of oslo from his place!

in other news, school starts today. can i get a thesis topic already so i can finish it as soon as possible, please!

yesterday: long and hectic

i met ed westwick/chuck bass yesterday when we shot him for Penshoppe.
all the pictures i took were taken by the Penshoppe people though! security was real tight although i wish they told me i couldn't take photos beforehand. as usual, the people behind the scenes were the ones going around as if they were the stars while ed was really nice. him and his cool brit accent. he never smiled for the shots though. it was as if he was still playing chuck with his schemy look.

darren was really quick though. what was expected to be a full day shoot turned out to be half a day! he got his shots probably in 20 clicks. and it would've probably been quicker if it weren't for the styling, escorting ed around the service exits, chitchatting of the feeling important people, etc.

we shot at manila pen for the whole shoot and coincidentally, my former officemates were there for a meeting too! salon de ning was awesome! i regret not getting the complimentary drinks we had for that place when we checked in for christmas last year. me and ed were even talking about how cool the rooms were. haha. i wanted to ask who was playing romeo in the remake of romeo and juliet but i was kinda sure he wouldn't spill.

and then at night, had dinner at sabs' then watched them play frisbee at ultra. i really miss doing sports. i need money to do that though! :(

anyway, this is a pretty useless post. just an update to what happened yesterday.

a random wandering

i just came from the beach. my first one for the summer. my second since i got back. sad.

it was a random beach trip composed mostly of people i didn't know but it was fun, nonetheless! at the very least i knew the owner of the house! haha. my body is aching so much from jetskiing though. i think i went too fast! also did some cliffdiving which is one of the highlights of Tali beach in Batangas. the weather was not as cooperative as we would have wanted it to be but it surely didn't stop us from having a good time! a much needed break from the city.

also got to drive to and from manila. there's something about long drives that calms me. as long as there is no traffic, i'll be your driver. :D sadly though, not enough pics were taken! the pic above is taken by chinette on our way back to manila from their car. the silver SantaFe of Chix in the picture was the one i drove.

i've been putting off updating here since nothing really is happening. i've been jobless for a month now. i've stopped looking for my next one until i have a set schedule. i hated declining that job for kish because i had other things pending. i also have this pending job to house sit in boracay which i probably will decline too. this week and next week should hopefully help me in my next move. also, i need a better thesis topic. or a good creative angle to approach the RH bill. maybe tourism, culture or environment? i really cant concentrate on working on it even though i really need to finish it as soon as possible.

help me win

to whoever comes across this blog, i apologize for this plug but do try to help me win by liking my photo on facebook. just click on this link and like it! thank you!

its of this photo from the Church of Gesu in Rome! i immediately thought of this photo when i read the theme of the contest is Extra Ordinary Angles.

as miguel, my friend from mexico puts it, the picture is ironic in the sense that you get the feeling that as a viewer of the photo, someone else is taking a photo of you while you are admiring the beauty of the ceiling. or something like that. you get what i mean right? or what he means. :) it's too early.

forget about the ones who don't

"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,
so love the people who treat you right.
Forget about the ones who don't,
and believe that everything happens for a reason.
If you get a chance, take it.
If it changes your life, let it.
Nobody said that it'd be easy,
they just promised it would be worth it."

eurowandering 2010

so obviously i have had this plan in my head for so long but never really got the chance to work on it until yesterday. it is rather vain and really just for my memory's sake so brace yourself for a lot of my face which i rarely post here. :)

i got the peg from christopher rehage, the man who planned to walk from beijing to germany. he didn't make it but he made was able to cover 4646km in one year! he took loads of photos and did this video. i thought it was a cool way to document the eurowandering i did.

Duomo di Milano

i saw these shots while fixing some albums and i don't think i ever posted them ever. these were from when Fran and I went to Milan to catch the last leg of the winter sale in mid-january. we decided to do things more cultural and went up the Milan Cathedral. the cathedral was just one of the best i have seen. i guess, it makes up for how fast and stressful life is in Milan. it works. i mean, i hated how dark and seemingly polluted(as compared to other italian cities) the city is but then you see this pink-ish glow from a distance, smack right in the middle of a huge piazza, the cathedral stands with all its pinnacles and spires pointing to the heavens and then you realize you've been staring at it for a while in awe. though there have been mixed reviews about it such as john ruskin's comment, the cathedral steals "from every style in the world: and every style spoiled," I still think it is grand and breathtaking.

on keeping in touch

my italian family:) during bene's laurea
im stupid with technology. i'd even prefer not having a celphone. remember those times when people were more patient? when one could wait for a while for the other person before texting right away, 'where are you? i'm here already.'

but i admit that there are priceless benefits that technology has given us. and skype is one of them!
i got to video call with a good friend in Italy last night. we got to catch up on how their group is doing.
non ho parlato con lei per tante mesi! anche abbiamo paralto in Italiano! il mio italiano e brutto ma lei ha capito. :)

it's good to keep in touch. last week, i messaged a lot of people i met during my travels and got to read updates from my friends from Europe, South America, America, Asia. :) also, it is a good way to go down memory lane.

it's Easter again! Prague Entry!

hello peeps!
its holy week! easter sunday brings me back to last year's in Bohemia!
Prague, Czech Republic and basically the whole easter trip of 2010 was just awesome! i remember not having any hosts and was prepared to spend loads on hostels but each time i got to my new city, a host would accept me or offer me a place after seeing my post in the emergency couchrequests! it really amazes me how much good there is out there, from mere strangers who basically have my online profile to base their knowledge of me from.

During my first night, i got to learn how to swing when my hosts brought me to this Prague Spring Swing where everyone were dressed in their 1920's inspired costumes, i got to experience a new Christianity when they brought me to church(not in the usual Roman Catholic way but the more interactive and less sermon kind of way), then went around and met random people, took the sandeman's free tour, lost a scarf, made a good friend with the same intense levels of wanderlust in us, etc!

anyway, here are some more pics from last year's in Praha!

another 'into the wild' entry and a little 'the beach'

Piccole Dolomiti w/ Luca and Roby(man in pic)
i haven't had the chance to catch up on my reading and so my entries on 'into the wild' has not materialized until now. yesterday, a saturday, i opted to leave the laptop behind and took my copy of the book and sat in a shop while eating. i sat there and consciously forgot the deadlines i am currently working on. it was a simple pleasure and i enjoyed it very much. then, i realized there's a lot of simple pleasures that i have forgotten while on this road of earning money. i hate it. i hate money and that we need a certain kind of currency to live. i hate that to live a simple life means to live a hard life, at least here in manila(debatable, i know.)

an officemate said, 'you're in the corporate world already...' that's when i woke up, a jolt of reality hit me. like when chris/alex(movie version) went back to society and imagined himself to be in a suit acting just like one of them. or when richard(the beach, movie version) went for that rice run and saw the world outside the island. thing is, they both went back and rejected the idea of once again being part of it all. i didn't.

chris mccandless said to ron franz: "Mr. Franz I think careers are a 20th century invention and I don't want one."

heavy. very heavy things have been written and i'm sorry it has to be out there.
______________________________________________________

some excerpts from the book:

everett ruess' letters
"After all the lone trail is the best...I'll never stop wandering."
"I have always been unsatisfied with life as most people live it. Always I want to live more intensely and richly."

Into the Wild book"So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."

up for the challenge

i miss dressing up. getting up in the morning and putting a lot of thought into what i'd be donning for the day. you see, it's quite hard to do here in Manila especially if you have no car. with the heat and all. that's why i take it more as a challenge to pick clothes accordingly.
and especially in my case now, living off a bag with limited supply of clothes. its like im couchsurfing again but its been almost two months! :)

scandinavia longing: a design pursuit

lighting i would've bought if i lived in stockholm

oops you did it again eraser

interior of the Opera house in Oslo

artpiece in stockholm museum

i have been forcing the creative juices out of me for the past few weeks for a couple of projects and it delights me to be able to use my travels as inspiration. i've been going through a lot of scandinavian sites and looking at my past pictures from there. well, mostly swedish sites. because i love sweden like that. it inspires me to design. naks. :)

andy warhol installation in one of the museums in stockholm

neumeister has the most beautiful packaging and i was happy to know that they designed the bottle packaging i really liked. i even brought that bottle back to Padova! anyway, as i have probably discussed here before, to me, stockholm is one of my top cities in europe because the creative vibe is just so strong. although, advertising has the aspect of knowing the market and making it for them and i think these designs and having adapted it to my personal style does not translate well with the filipino market which sucks big time.

the sheep in stockholm were very gute. just wanted to share
